Don't expect to be in and out of Phidippipdes in a flash! Most newcomers should plan on spending 45 minutes or so to be properly fitted.
We're going to chat with you about what kind of running you do, where you run, what, if any, injuries you have had or are currently suffering from. We'll want to take a look at your foot shape, watch you stand and walk in the various shoes you'll try. We're going to ask you take a spin down the sidewalk in the shoes you try. We'll watch you in those shoes to make sure they are providing proper support for your foot. You don't have to worry - we've been in our location for 28 years and all the neighbors know what we're about - so don't feel bashful - they're used to folks running up and down in front of our store - so just get on out there and get some extra mileage in!
If you are planning to come by it's helpful to keep the following in mind:
- Dress comfortably so you can run down the walk and try the shoes out
- If you have a pair of old shoes, bring them along. Looking at wear patterns on old shoes is often quite instructive.
- If you wear custom orthotics or another type of over the counter arch support, bring them along so they can be properly fitted in the shoes. Once in a while, we find that some orthotics won't work well in certain shoes.
- Some people have a tendency to have more swollen feet later in the day. If you do, time your visit accordingly to make the sizing process more accurate.
- DO tell us how the shoes feel. Don't be shy. While there is a range of proper length and width that is generally accepted, some people like shoes tighter or looser than others, and we want you to try on what feels right to you. We will, of course, warn you if we think it's not the way to go. We like to "bracket" your sizes -- try a half size up or down; fiddle with different widths - after all is said and done it is YOUR foot in the shoe. We'll raise the red flag if we think it's a mistake, but no one is going to twist your arm to make you take a certain size. Craig used to say "If everyone had my feet, all we would carry is size 11 Epirus."
- We can use the Brannock device to size you just for fun, but recent studies have shown that the Brannock device predicts the correct athletic shoe size less than 20% of the time. And you probably won't be the same size in every shoe anwyay - so keep an open mind about your real shoe size
- Most men will be about 1/2 size larger than their street shoe size. Women are usually 1 to 1 1/2 sizes larger
- There's a lot of "tricks" to the trade that you may not know, so be sure to mention if you have any chronic discomfort, blistering, etc that you have never resolved. We may know just how to remedy the problem.
So please come by and get the Phidippides experience that has kept us in business for over 28 years! You'll be glad you did.
A portion of our shoe selection!
We have more pairs of some styles than many other stores have in their entire inventory. Our normal inventory is over 6000 pair covering 350 plus styles of shoes and widths. We have to have an inventory large enough to show you what you need, not what we happen to have in stock. If we don't have what you really need, we'll suggest you wait until we can get it for you rather than sell you something that we really don't think is right for you.
